Human Comparative Advantage

Pick an essential human role. Engineer the supersuit around it. Give the practitioner their time back from drudgery so they can stay in the work that only they can do. That work is also where their durable commercial edge lives.

The Claim​

Every essential human role has a center of gravity that machines cannot occupy. A teacher who actually forms students. A musician whose work moves people. A doctor whose diagnostic instinct saves the call. A pastor whose presence steadies a room. The thing the role is for, at its irreducible core, is human. It requires a specific human's specific shape to perform.

Around that center sits a much larger volume of drudgery. Documentation. Triage. Admin. Reporting. Scheduling. Tracking. Synthesis. Routine communication. None of it is the role. All of it eats hours that should be spent on the role.

The applied AI engineer's job is to engineer the supersuit. Collapse the drudgery to a fraction of the time it currently costs. Reinvest those hours in the human-only work the practitioner is uniquely made to do. That work is the practitioner's human comparative advantage, and serving it is the highest-leverage move in applied AI.

What Counts as a Human Comparative Advantage​

Three tests, all of which have to be true:

  1. It requires presence and judgment to perform. The work involves presence, taste, judgment, care, or relational discernment that a model cannot replicate. See human skills for the canonical list.
  2. Its specific shape is uniquely yours. Two excellent teachers do this work differently because they are different humans. Trying to flatten that difference is what a worse system would do. The point of the supersuit is to sharpen it.
  3. It compounds the practitioner's commercial position over time. People pay for the human work above the floor of what AI can produce. They do not pay for the drudgery, because the drudgery is now nearly free. See there is no demand for average and sustained commercial success.

If a workflow fails any of these tests, it is a candidate for collapse. If it passes all three, it is a candidate for protection and amplification.

The Supersuit Engineer​

A supersuit engineer is an applied AI practitioner who deploys their craft in service of another human's human comparative advantage. The practitioner stays the protagonist. The engineer builds the wiring around them.

The engineer's stance:

  • Service over architecture. The system has to be for the practitioner. If the practitioner does not love it, the system has failed by definition, regardless of what it can technically do.
  • Listening before designing. Before any tool is shown, sit with the practitioner long enough to model their actual workflow end to end. The engineer who shows up with strong opinions about the practitioner's craft has already lost.
  • Time saved is the load-bearing metric. Hours back to the practitioner is the unit of value. Everything else is a means to that.
  • The human is the conductor. AI is the orchestra. The practitioner decides what music is worth playing. The engineer never confuses the two.

Pick the Role You Would Actually Be Essential To​

If you cannot already articulate what makes a great version of the role distinct from a credentialed one, you should not be building infrastructure for it. You will optimize for the wrong thing.

The right roles are easy to name once you can see the human depth in them: teachers, musicians, pastors, doctors, therapists, attorneys, founders, youth coaches, chaplains, midwives, tradespeople with a craft. Pick one you can see clearly and would actually be essential to, not just interested in. Discern through the work, conversations, and the conference of influences around you.

Good Intentions Are the Skepticism Solvent​

Most essential human roles have already been bruised by outside tech vendors. They expect the next system to threaten them, surveil them, replace them, or push them faster than they want to move. Their suspicion is rational.

The way through is not a better deck. It is a posture the room can feel.

A supersuit engineer leads with three things:

  • The practitioner is the point. Said early, said clearly, said again. Every design decision visibly serves the practitioner's craft.
  • A pilot, not a rollout. One practitioner, one workflow, one season. Built with them, judged by them.
  • Collapse the drudgery, protect the human core. Name what the system will not do as carefully as what it will. Cameras, surveillance, automation of the irreplaceable parts: those are not on the table without the practitioner's full agency.

When the room feels these three, suspicion becomes curiosity. When the engineer's actual intentions match the words, curiosity becomes invitation. When the invitation comes, the design work begins.

The Commercial Logic​

The hours reinvested in human work make every future hour more valuable. Human work is what the market actually pays for above the floor, and the floor keeps rising. The applied AI engineer's highest move is to engineer the supersuit around an essential human's human comparative advantage. Collapse the drudgery. Protect the human work.
