The Imagination Economy
The emerging economy where imagination, backed by applied AI leverage and the right team, is the primary asset. The defining companies and technologies are the ones that couldn't have existed before 2026: applied AI that centers humans at the highest possible level. Coined by Imagos Labs, adopted into AAS language because it names the stake behind the practice.
What The Imagination Economy Is
Capital was the primary asset of the industrial economy. Attention was the primary asset of the social-media economy. Imagination is the primary asset of the economy we are entering now.
Specifically: the ability of a human to see what has never existed, articulate it with enough precision for a team (increasingly an agentic team) to build it, and steward its release into the world. In an economy where execution is commoditized, the scarce input is the originating vision that the execution serves. The operator whose imagination produces clear, specific, useful, soulful new things wins. Everyone else is renting attention.
The imagination economy sits on top of three converging facts:
- AI compresses the cost of bringing an imagined thing into existence. What used to require a team of twenty and eighteen months now requires a team of three and six weeks. Implementation is no longer the gate.
- Distribution has been democratized. Anyone with a laptop can reach a global audience. Reach is not the gate either.
- The remaining gate is the quality and specificity of the thing being imagined. Vision, taste, soul, coherence, emotional truth. Not things you can buy with venture capital.
Put those three together and the bottleneck settles on imagination itself, the uniquely human capacity to see what is not yet there.
Why It Matters Now, Specifically
The defining companies and technologies of this decade will be the ones that couldn't have existed before 2026. Before now, the imagination required for them was not matched by the tooling to build them. The operator who imagined them could not access the capacity to ship them. The operator with the capacity to ship did not have the soul to imagine them. Everyone was gated.
The 2026 unlock is the moment the two halves of that equation converged in the hands of individual operators. A single committed practitioner, with a Personal Agentic OS and a clear vision, can now build and release things that required whole companies five years ago. What they are bringing into existence is the imagination economy's catalog.
The operators who understand this are not racing to reproduce old products faster. They are asking a different question: what could now exist that couldn't have before?
Applied AI That Centers Humans At The Highest Level
A loose idea of "more imagination" would not be a useful frame if it were not paired with the specific quality criterion that defines the imagination economy: applied AI that centers humans at the highest possible level.
"At the highest possible level" means the human is at the center of the design, the incentive structure, the compensation, the distribution, and the outcome. The product works because it makes specific human lives richer, clearer, freer, or more sovereign. The business model routes economic value to the humans who made and used the thing rather than extracting from them.
This is the operational criterion that separates the imagination economy from its extractive twin. Any sufficiently capable AI-plus-imagination stack can also produce extraction at terrifying scale: funnels, dark patterns, engineered dependency, attention traps. The imagination economy is the name for the version that does not.
If what you are building:
- Produces something people are willingly and happily paying for because it serves their lives,
- Routes value back to the creators, contributors, and community rather than extracting from them,
- Could not have existed before 2026 because the tooling simply was not there,
- And lifts everyone at the table when the deals land,
you are operating inside the imagination economy. If any one of those is missing, you are doing something else that happens to use similar instruments.
Who Is Building It
Not a single archetype. Three overlapping ones:
- Cultural leaders with real audiences (artists, musicians, filmmakers, writers, designers, pastors, athletes) who are adding applied AI capacity and cultural architecture around their creative work. This is the core Imagos Labs thesis: Pegasus teams built around human unicorns who already have traction.
- Non-developer business operators who are being Jarvised and using the leverage to build 2026-native companies that could not have existed inside the old cost structure. Real product, real audience, built with a team that fits inside a contact roster.
- Top-tier applied AI engineers who understand that the most interesting work is no longer the framework, the harness, or the latest model. It is the specific 2026-native product that is possible when they sit next to a human unicorn with a real vision.
The imagination economy is the economy those three types produce together. It is also the reason the Humanity-First Flywheel works: the four communities AAS serves are exactly the communities this economy compounds through.
AAS's Relationship To The Frame
Imagos Labs coined imagination economy. Applied AI Society is the activation layer that makes imagination-economy participation possible for the person who does not yet know they are going to be a participant. The Literacy Earthshot cross is the on-ramp. The applied AI practice is the discipline. The use cases are the concrete places the practice compounds into real builds.
When a Jarvis-activated operator starts producing 2026-native work, they become a participant in the imagination economy whether they use the phrase or not. The purpose of naming the frame is so the operators, collaborators, and partners stop pattern-matching their work onto the predatory shapes their industry has pre-installed and start pattern-matching onto the shape their work actually is.
The imagination economy is not coming. It is quietly shipping, in private workspaces, on ordinary laptops, in the hands of people with vision and a Personal Agentic OS. The question is whether you are one of the people imagining it into being, or one of the people still operating inside the old cost structure.
