Code of Conduct

The Short Version

Be kind to others. Do not insult or put others down. Behave professionally. Remember that harassment and sexist, racist, or exclusionary jokes are not appropriate.

All communication should be appropriate for a professional audience including people of many different backgrounds. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate.

Applied AI Society is dedicated to providing a harassment-free community for everyone, regardless of background. We do not tolerate harassment of community members in any form.

Thank you for helping make this a welcoming, friendly community for all.

Our Community

Members of the Applied AI Society community value kindness, transparency, curiosity, and collaboration. Behaviors that reinforce these values contribute to a positive environment including:

  • Being open to collaboration
  • Focusing on what is best for the community
  • Acknowledging time and effort
  • Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
  • Showing empathy towards other community members
  • Being considerate and courteous when disagreeing or raising issues
  • Using welcoming language

We are committed to providing a positive experience for all participants.

Inappropriate Behavior

Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants include:

  • Harassment of participants in any form
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
  • Logging or taking screenshots of online activity for harassment purposes
  • Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or electronic address, without explicit permission
  • Violent threats or language directed against another person
  • Incitement of violence or harassment towards any individual, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm
  • Creating additional online accounts to harass another person or circumvent a ban
  • The use of sexualized language or imagery
  • Posting sexually explicit or violent material
  • Sexist, racist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language
  • Insults, put-downs, or jokes that are exclusionary or that hold others up for ridicule
  • Excessive profanity
  • Unwelcome sexual attention or advances
  • Unwelcome physical contact, including simulated physical contact (e.g., textual descriptions like "hug" or "backrub") without consent or after a request to stop
  • Patterns of inappropriate social contact, such as requesting/assuming inappropriate levels of intimacy with others
  • Comments that demean or exclude others
  • Trolling or insulting and derogatory comments
  • Sharing confidential content without consent
  • Sustained disruption of community discussions or events
  • Continuing to initiate interaction with someone after being asked to stop
  • Other conduct that is inappropriate for a professional audience
  • Advocating for or encouraging any of the above behaviors

Community members asked to stop any inappropriate behavior are expected to comply immediately.

Weapons Policy

No weapons are allowed at Applied AI Society events. The term "weapon" encompasses any object or substance designed to inflict a wound, incapacitate, or cause injury, and includes, but is not limited to, the following: firearms, explosives (including fireworks), large knives such as those used for hunting or display, other dangerous weapons, and replicas of dangerous weapons. Anyone seen in possession of one of these items will be asked to leave immediately and will only be allowed to return without the weapon.

Consequences

If a participant engages in behavior that violates this Code of Conduct, Applied AI Society leadership may take any action they deem appropriate, including:

  • A verbal or written warning
  • Temporary removal from community spaces
  • Permanent removal from the community with no option to return

Scope

This Code of Conduct applies to all Applied AI Society spaces, including:

  • Our GitHub organization and repositories
  • Any future community spaces (forums, chat platforms, etc.)
  • Events hosted by Applied AI Society

How to Report

If you believe someone has violated the Applied AI Society Code of Conduct, we encourage you to report it. If you are unsure whether the incident is a violation, we still encourage you to report it.

To make a report:

  • Email: gary@appliedaisociety.org
  • Subject line: "Code of Conduct Report"
  • Include as much detail as possible about the incident

You will receive a response within 48 hours.

All reports will be kept confidential. We will anonymize details as much as possible to protect reporter privacy.

As our community grows, we will establish a dedicated Code of Conduct committee. This document will evolve accordingly.

Evolution

This Code of Conduct will evolve as our community grows. We welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement.
