Don't Assume Common Sense

Remove "common sense" from your vocabulary. It doesn't exist; only shared understanding built through explicit documentation.

The test: Pick 10 random people in any city and ask them about almost any topic. Will you get alignment across all 10 people?

The answer is no, which is why assuming common sense creates massive operational failures.

Why This Matters

When you tell employees to "treat customers well" or "maintain quality standards" without explicit documentation, you're forcing them to fill gaps with personal assumptions. The variance in how reasonably smart, well-intentioned people interpret these directives can be enormous.

This variance destroys consistency as you scale. Your customer experience becomes a lottery based on which employee they encounter.

The Hidden Cost of "Common Sense"

Every undocumented expectation becomes a source of:

Document the Specifics

  • Customer interaction protocols: How do you actually care about customers? What does that look like in practice?
  • Quality standards: What specific behaviors create the experience you want?
  • Decision-making criteria: How should employees handle edge cases and judgment calls?
  • Success stories: Detailed breakdowns of exemplary work that embodies your standards

Eliminate Ambiguous Language

  • Replace "be professional" with specific behavioral expectations
  • Replace "deliver quality" with measurable standards and examples
  • Replace "good judgment" with decision frameworks and precedents
  • Replace "common sense" with explicit principles and procedures

Use AI to Scale Documentation

  • Interview employees who embody your standards
  • Process conversations into training materials using AI assistance
  • Create system prompts for both human and AI agents
  • Build searchable knowledge bases from successful project examples
